The original award, Japan Picture Book Award, was founded in 1978 by the Yomiuri Shimbun, one of the Japanese national newspaper company, and Japan School Library Association but was suspended in 1992. It then resumed as Japan Picture Book Award in 1995 to disseminate picture book arts, to promote reading and to contribute to the development of children’s books.
